Liquid Cargo Shenanigans

The RecycleCycle was recently put to the test and passed with flying colors when used to transport a keg of beer still 2/3rds full all the way across town.

Gallatin Valley Bike Club Spring Party

Attention Bozeman cyclists, the 2011 GVBC spring party is tonight - Wednesday, March 23, at 6 pm at the Lindley Center. There will be pizza and beer (it's a keg so bring your own mug or you can purchase a GVBC pint glass for $5).

Please bring something for the potluck. People who's names start with A through M should bring side dish type things, letters N through Z should bring desserts.

If you wish to learn more about the Gallatin Valley Bike Club, visit their website at http://www.gallatinvalleybicycleclub.org

Did I mention there will be a keg?

Redundancy Alleycat Race Report

Thanks to the thirty hardcore cyclists who showed up at Bogert Park in the middle of a torrential downpour to ride wet streets, muddy trails, avoid (or partake in) physical altercations with a transient, summit the shit out of multiple fake rocks, go to the ends of the earth (or at least the end of our humble little burg), and then finish it all up by drinking cans of Miller High Life beer while soaking wet.

Redundancy Alleycat 2009 ManifestA number of the requirements on the manifest involved riders taking photos of various elements around town with the purpose of them being voted on after the ride by a couple of the event sponsors (Stevil of "All Hail the Black Market", John F. of "Chunkstyle", and Pete of "M.O.R.B.I.D." and maybe local bicycling non-celebrity or two such as Sethanol. Five people submitted photos that had about thirteen people in them so rather than vote on anything I'll just post 'em up for people to enjoy and if any of the photos get a bunch of comments I'll give them a prize (I haven't actually received the prize I want to give away yet no thanks to 685... I should really contact him and tell him to send that to me).

Redundancy Alleycat Photos

Comment away on ones you like. A few of them are worthy of posting here for one reason or another - reasons I've stated in their captions.

All Hail the Black Market Photo Contest
Tom getting his photo taken withe the AHTBM sign as required in the manifest just before getting punched in the neck by the transient dude who happened to live at this alleycat stop. Doh.

Graffiti Photo
Instructions at one of the stops included the words "...Keep in mind that Stevil [a judge] is a dirty fuck so no amount of lewdness will offend him. Middle fingers, bare asses, and beers represent, mofos!" so why not take it seriouly? They took it seriously elsewhere also - - check the photo gallery for that ravishing pic.

Nice!
Anytime there's blood let during an event that supposed to be fun is awesome.

Miller High Life
Why is this a good photo? It has High Life in it, obviously.

Dan and RedunDANt - Butter is not a Snack
If there was or is going to be a photo contest I think this entry by Liz should win based simply on the fact that is completely and totally for the win.

Stupid Fun Ride, This Saturday Night.

A couple of weeks ago, some of us were at a party. Like most parties we go to, this one consisted of mostly bike geeks. There was a nearly full moon, and the night was cool and clear, and we had bikes and were a bit buzzed on good beer.
Naturally, someone says, "Let's go for a ride!"
So a few of us hop on our bikes- a fixed gear, a single speed, and a multi-speed townie- all with smooth road tires- and we head out to ride some trails on the south side of town in the moonlight.
And that was one of the most fun rides I've ever done. Slick tires skittering across the trail, struggling to keep Captain E in sight (more difficult with my headlight off) and laughing my ass off.
After that I figured that this is WAY too much fun to not make a regular event.
So this Saturday night, at at 8pm meet at Spectator's by MSU. We'll have a few drinks, then ride, then head on into town and probably go someplace else. Kinda like a pub ride, but a bit more riding.

See you there.

PS: Pirate theme.

At Rogue Public House, PDX

Mmm...Rogue brewpub. Molly's having the Imperial IPA, Brigid the Imperial Pilsener, and I'm having their rum. The beer is good, service a bit tacky, tchatchke. Much like at Montana Ale Works (except the people working the bar- those guys n gals rock!).

Clunker Downhill, This Sunday!

Old bikes, cruisers, anything but modern mountain bikes. This Sunday afternoon, probably Moser in Hyalite.
A few of us are going to get together for a nice Mt. Tam style clunker downhill. We'll shuttle via truck and send someone down first with a walkie-talkie to make sure the path is clear. Then we'll drink some cheap beer. So get your ratty old jeans and flannel (unless it's hot) and an old cruiser and stay tuned for the details. Nothing competitive, no prizes- just fun.

Sorry.

I won't lie to you. I had some fun this last weekend. I wish I had it in me to discuss it in detail. But, frankly, a gentleman doesn't speak. Suffice to say that word on the street is that something of this nature will happen regularly. For those of you that missed out...you missed out

Here are the pictures. Buy the way, Ruben fell into a pothole the size of a kiddy pool and then laughed about it and asked me to take a picture. He was either drunk (likely) or just thought it awesome (also very likely as Ruben is awesome).

Shit might be off the hook next weekend, keep your ear(s) to the ground.

Booooo "No Trick Riding"

Hooray Beer!

A question of paradigm

Bozeman has this thing called Music on Main, and it's basically evolved into an excuse to drink while walking through the middle of main street. In order to keep everything all benignly American, local bars hand out bright pink wrist bands after people show an ID at the door, and then serve drinks in an 'inconspicuous' plastic cup so people don't have to be alarmed by seeing a bunch of twenty somethings walking around with 'gasp' alcohol. It's amazing how four years of high school so completely dictate everything about how people behave in every single facet of their lives.

Sorry I digress...how does this pertain to bikes? These wristbands have emblazoned on them an admonishment against Montana's second favorite pass-time.

(For those of you not savvy enough with the internets to click on the above picture, it says "DUI, you can't afford it. Be Smart. Ride the Bus" (Not-so-cleverly edited by yours truely)

Me being me, I felt the need to alter it a bit to turn it from a rather preposterous suggestion to a far more practical alternative to something powered by fossil fuels. Seriously, what would you rather do; sit on an odd smelling bus full of strangers (that you waited twenty minutes for), or have a pleasant midsummer evening ride on the most efficient form of transportation yet devised by man?

It reminds me of King Solomon who said 'there is nothing new under the sun'. I've remarked many times to sEtOH, Captain E, DNA, and the Coyote that over the last eight weeks, more and more people have been riding bikes around Bozeman. Every day on my ride into work I see another middle-aged guy wearing a Bell helmet with a neon yellow nylon cover riding an old school touring bike down one of Bozeman's main drags.

What does this all mean? I have no idea. But clearly you are smarter than American Big-Business. Cuz some generic ad company is pushing riding a bus, and true blue patriots are naturally falling into the most spontaneous solution to the sloth of fossil fuel that there is. (OK, Miller isn't really the 'true blue patriot' I'm just as much of a slave to a clever ad campaign as the next idiot. But hey, they play to a certain crowd.)

Whatever. Share the stoke with the other riders you see. They get what so many others continue to refuse. They get what you've probably embraced for far longer than it was fashionable. But hey! They get it! And even if they don't get it, you should help and encourage them until they get it. Cuz the future looks bleak for American obesity and increased habitual cycling has all kinds of benefits. And, even if it weren't for any of those things I know for certain that there is something about riding a bike, and if we get everyone to get that then everything else will be ok.

Be safe out there! Make sure your family knows you care, and tell your friends that they kick ass!
